Hello wine lovers,
I am sorry I was absent for 3 months writing news letters. But you know it is same time of the year, harvest season! We still have our Cabernets hanging to be picked in a few weeks.
This has been another tough year for Ontario wineries and grape growers. As I wrote in one of my spring e-letters, because of winter injury the grape yields in vinifera varieties (the good stuff) are down by 70-80% from normal. Some vineyards experienced even much harder freeze, most of their vines died. They all need to be replanted and expected to start bearing grapes in 3-5 years.
Icellars fared well as we do not have many dead vines (less than 1%) but we have a much smaller 2022 crop. I see a significant grape and VQA wine shortage for the next few years. The wineries who own their vineyard/grapes will do better than who purchase most of their grapes from growers. I wish good luck to everyone, grape growing is not an easy feet in our climate.
Now some good news. Following the success of our 2021 Wine Advent Calendars, we decided to release another small batch of 2022 calendars. We rebottle our most popular wines in small 50 ml bottles and beautifully package them in gift boxes. There are 24 bottles in each box with a wine list and numbered slots. We are adding our 2017 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon and 2019 Cabernet Franc icewine to the list.
